As part of Dementia Friendly Tempe, the Memory Café provides a social and resource place for people living with memory loss and their caregivers. Each Monday from 9:30am – 12N, participants meet in the Tempe Learning Center (lower level). Caregivers participate in an education/support session while people with memory loss actively participate in a cognitive engagement program. Dementia Friendly Tempe Presents: Medical Marijuana and Dementia

Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia are common symptoms in patients with dementia. These behaviors are often characterized by agitation, physical or verbal aggressiveness, restlessness, and inappropriate loudness, such as yelling and screaming. The treatment options for these symptoms are very limited because of the moderate to severe side effects associated with the currently available medications. Join Dr. Walter Nieri from the University of Arizona College of Medicine as he discusses clinical studies that show cannabinoids could have a beneficial effect on behavioral disorders in general, and possibly in dementia-related-disorders. Join us for a free, family-friendly picnic which will include activities, food and more on the capitol lawn in honor of National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. The evening will culminate in lighting the capitol purple, the color designated to honor the more than 5 million American’s living with Alzheimer’s disease. Free but registration is required.

Come flex your brain muscles at a FREE Brain Health Program! Your brain is so much more than memory! In this program, learn about the different domains of your brain, such as cognition, language, attention, visuospatial, executive function, and, of course, memory. By starting with a discussion of the difference between “normal aging” & something more serious & a self-assessment, the Brain Health Program can act as your personal trainer by teaching you activities to aid in strengthening domains that you want to improve. Also reviewed are lifestyle factors related to brain health. Free but registration is required.
