Life Enrichment Programs

Banner Alzheimer’s Institute is proud of the partnerships we have created and sustained with local arts organizations. At any of these programs, people with dementia and care partners will find fun, friendships and creativity. 

Program:

Arts Engagement at Phoenix Art Museum

Description: 

This innovative, six-part program actively engages adults with mild to moderate dementia and their care partners with the visual arts. The program blends facilitated conversations around artworks in the collection that aid in triggering memories and strengthening observational skills and focus. Each session explores new artistic themes in a welcoming and social environment.

Cost per session (for both participants) is $50. This fee includes luncheon for two, six interactive programs, a one-year Membership for non-members, and all materials. Sessions are offered every fall, spring and summer. Register early as space is limited.

Program:

Arts in Mind at Mesa Arts Center 

Description: 

This NEW program is designed for individuals with mild to moderate dementia and their care partners in order to foster dignity and sense of self, while building connection and friendship with others through use of the arts. No prior arts experience is necessary as participants will enjoy expression, creativity and the experience.

Program:

B-Sharp Music Wellness at The Phoenix Symphony

Description: 

A W.O.N.D.E.R. Project for Alzheimer’s is a program designed for individuals with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias as well as their care partners. Participants attend Friday morning Coffee Classics and receive an exclusive pre-concert chat about the day’s music with Principal Timpanist, Bruce Pulk.

Other optional program components include backstage tours and a “lunch on your own” with fellow participants at a nearby restaurant following the concert.

Program:

Making Music, Making Memories: A program for people with memory loss and their partners.

Description: 

Weekly music therapy group sessions that provide an opportunity for music lovers to come together to sing, play an instrument, drum or tap along to the music. A love of music is the only requirement!

Care partners and participants meet every Friday (10:30–11:30 a.m.) at the Pyle Adult Recreation Center, 655 E. Southern Ave., in Tempe. The cost is $10 per participant pair each week or $100 for a block of 10–12 sessions. Classes are hosted by the Herberger ASU School of Music and co-sponsored by the City of Tempe and Banner Alzheimer’s Institute.

Memory Arts Bistro

Description: 

This regular series of free afternoon arts events is for those with memory loss, their caregivers and families. The program focuses on interactive arts, socializing and connecting memories with the arts and is held on the Benevilla campus at 16752 N. Greasewood Street in Surprise.

Program:

Memory Café at Tempe Public Library 

Description: 

As part of Dementia Friendly Tempe, the Memory Café provides a social and resource place for people living with memory loss and their caregivers. Each Monday from 9:30 am-noon, participants meet in the Tempe Learning Center (lower level). Caregivers participate in an education/support session while people with memory loss actively participate in a cognitive engagement program. The program is free and no reservations are required.

Program:

Memory Lounge

Description: 

Scottsdale Arts presents a new program series for people living with early to moderate stages of dementia-related illness, and their care partners. Memory Lounge is designed to be an enjoyable, social outing that fosters living in the moment while engaging in the arts, featuring artist-led workshops and museum tours, and light appetizers. Each workshop will focus on a specific arts discipline, including visual arts, music, dance, poetry, drama and more. 

The next program takes place December 7, 1-4 p.m. at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) 7374 E. Second Street, Scottsdale.

Program:

With Art In Mind 

Description: 

This program seeks to engage people living with dementia through studio art classes at Phoenix Center for the Arts. With Art in Mind is open to anyone living within the early to moderate stages of dementia. Each week will feature a new studio art class program taught by a professional teaching artist.

With Art in Mind runs Tuesdays from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Visual Arts Building, Collaboratory classroom, unless otherwise specified.
